Creating a Brighter Future

RRWS 2-2024-66.jpg
Red Rock Wild Schooling is a program founded by two mothers.
We believe that it is possible and necessary to create an entirely different educational experience for the children of our community. We began with a group of eight students at our local state park. Within our first year, we outgrew that space. We realized that the demand for alternative education was not our dream alone, but one that many of us shared.

By working closely with our community, dedicated educators, parents, and the children...
We bring that dream into the light.
We give it a name and declare it a reality.
We take formal education and reimagine it.
We strip the walls away and make the earth our classroom.
We take the cliques away and make team building and emotional development a focus.
We blend an inviting, curiosity provoking curriculum with freedom, genuine joy, and the space for self expression.

“Passion is lifted from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young; it travels along grass-stained sleeves to the heart. If we are going to save environmentalism and the environment, we must also save an endangered indicator species: the child in nature.”  Richard Louv

Our Story

RED ROCK WILD SCHOOLING

Where academics meet adventure

Our program offers a unique blend of integrated academics and outdoor exploration, providing children with the best of both worlds. In our outdoor classroom, children engage in hands-on learning experiences that seamlessly weave together academic concepts with the wonders of the natural world.

Through interactive lessons and guided outdoor activities, children develop foundational skills in language arts, mathematics, and science while immersing themselves in the beauty and diversity of the forest environment. From measuring the height of trees to identifying animal tracks, every lesson becomes an exciting adventure that sparks curiosity and ignites a love for learning.

At Red Rock Wild Schooling, we believe in the power of nature to inspire and educate. Join us as we embark on a journey where learning knows no bounds, and every day is an opportunity for discovery and growth amidst the splendor of the great outdoors.

2 1/2-5 Year Old Program (Seedlings)

This program is a gentle transition for our littles from home into a focused learning environment with peers. We consider this their first step on an enriching journey of outdoor adventures and nature-inspired exploration. Through interactive activities, they explore letter and number recognition while being surrounded by the wonders of the outdoors. Short hikes and nature walks spark curiosity, while restful retreats provide moments of reflection. Our outdoor classroom offers diverse exploration zones, where children engage with the natural world freely, fostering a love for learning and nature that lasts a lifetime.

5-8 Year Old Program (Sprouts)

In our forest classroom, children engage in activities that foster literacy and numeracy skills, including reading, writing, and mathematics, all tailored to their developmental stage. Through storytelling, journaling, and interactive games, children immerse themselves in language arts and mathematical concepts in a setting that sparks their curiosity and creativity.

Additionally, our program introduces children to the basics of primitive skills, such as fire safety, plant identification, and outdoor survival techniques. These foundational skills empower children to connect with their surroundings and build confidence in their abilities, laying the groundwork for further exploration and learning.

8-12 Year Old Program (Saplings)

This program is designed to provide a holistic learning experience that goes beyond traditional academics. In addition to core subjects such as language arts, mathematics, science, and history, children engage in hands-on activities focused on primitive skills and real-life applications. From fire building and shelter construction to foraging and wilderness navigation, children learn essential survival skills that connect them with nature and build resilience as well as confidence in their abilities.

12-18 Year Old Program (Evergreens)

In our Evergreens class we offer a Waldorf based high school curriculum, while weaving in Montessori and forest school elements. We aim to prepare our students for the next part of their life journey.  The focus subjects for this age group are English, mathematics, history, science, and life skills. With our high school students, we are able to delve deeper into our element with wilderness survival skills. We offer a hands-on, project based, learning environment that creates a fun and engaging experience for our students.

Nestled within Sedona's red rock landscape, Red Rock Wild Schooling is a captivating oasis where nature becomes the classroom. Tree-shaded areas with soft patches of grass, winding trails leading to learning zones, each designated to facilitate exploration and hands-on discovery.

Our curriculum is as diverse as the flora and fauna that surround it. We integrate Waldorf, Montessori and Forest School philosophies into our teachings. Qualified educators guide the students on their educational journey, providing students with a well rounded experience. “Teach the children. We don’t matter so much, but the children do. Show them the daisies and the pale hepatica. Teach them the taste of sassafras and wintergreen…Give them the fields and the woods and the possibility of a world salvaged from the lords of profit. Stand them in the stream, head them upstream, rejoice as they learn to love this green space they live in, its sticks and leaves and then the silent, beautiful blossoms. Attention is the beginning of devotion.”
